In French, the letters “-er” at the end of a word with more than one syllable, the “r” become silent, and the “e” changes its sound to “ay”. Like “parler”.

masculine: Le premier -> silent “r” (pruh-mee-ay) feminine: La première -> sounded “r” (pruh-mee-air)

If the owrd is very short (one syllable), you do pronounce the “r”:
