The rise of computers and mobile phones for communication puts us at a crossroads. Some people think just when it seemed that things could not be worse for developing young people’s reading and writing skills in modern society, the use of computers and cellphones has joined the list. Reading and writing are never easy for young people, and some people think that, however, they are made easier by dint of the fact that the use of computers and mobile phones for communication is growing dramatically in recent years. My idea chimes with the latter perspective.
There are several reasons to believe that the use of computers and cellphones could negatively affect young people’s writing and reading skills. First, among the facts that emerged about this is that the popularity of shorthand spells, emojis, and even memes has caused many young people’s spelling ability to degrade significantly. Although these modern writing tools are more convenient and used faster in typing on computers or cell phones, swiftness in writing usually equals less patience in composing longer essays, which then translates into a greater number of mistakes, which leads to even more low quality writings for young people. Second, the use of digital devices could make young people less interested in using physical books, which could result in the decline of their reading skills. In fact it is the physical books in all walks of life that could teach every one real, comprehensive and useful skills, instead of superficial and bogus information on computer or internet.
However, these ideas mentioned before only scratch the surface of the real impacts of cellphones and computers in improving young people’s writing and reading skills. To start, the ubiquity of many grammar-checking tools on computers, which could unbelievably polish people’s writings to make them better in all standards, does not exist by accident. In addition, when coupled with infinite chances to have access to a huge amount of information and knowledge about various fields of life by using computers and cellphones, young people could explore more innovative ideas and writing styles to accomplish unique writings. Finally, for anyone who may doubt computer’s ability to advance/ ameliorate young people’s reading or writing skills, countless reading tools and content on the internet that easily accessed and provide all sorts of functions, such as translation, highlighting and searching, provide strong evidence.
Although there are downsides in using computers and cellphones for negatively affecting young people’s reading and writing skills, the rising tide for suppporting to take advantage of these digital tools is gathering momentum around the world for reasonable logic.
