President Biden is set to announce a new student debt relief plan that will impact millions of Americans if it goes into effect. Supreme Court struck down a previous plan. Chief White House correspondent Mary Bruce has the details. Good morning, Mary.
Good morning, George. Well, during a trip to the key battleground state of Wisconsin today, President Biden will unveil his new sweeping student loan plan, which could erase or lower debt for tens of millions of Americans.
So here is what we can expect: The plan targets runaway interest, canceling up to $20,000 for the 25 million borrowers who now owe more than they borrowed. Those making $120,000 or less a year would be eligible to have all of their interest wiped out. The plan would also eliminate debt for borrowers with at least 20-year-old loans.
Now, the rollout of this is set to begin this fall, and the White House says that combined with its previous efforts, this means that more than 30 million Americans could see relief.
Is this the president’s most significant attempt to address this since the Supreme Court struck down his plan last year? But, guys, it comes as the president is eager to show voters he can make good on this pledge as we head into the November election.

But in other news today, an earthquake has struck in Taiwan. Sally has the details of that morning.
Morning, thank you very much Steven. Yes, at least four people are dead, and dozens are injured after a 7.4 magnitude quake struck Taiwan. Seismologists say the earthquake is the strongest to hit the East Asian nation in 25 years.
Our Asia correspondent, Rupert Wingfield-Hayes, is in the capital Taipei for us this morning. Morning Rupert, what more do we know about the impact of this earthquake?
Well, it struck right across the east coast of the island and has unleashed a lot of damage. The most dramatic things we’ve seen so far are pictures of very large landslides.
The east coast of Taiwan is far more dramatic than the west coast, rugged and mountainous, and there are narrow valleys and high, craggy mountains over 12,000 ft high, and a lot of them go right down into the ocean.
What this earthquake is done this very very powerful shake this morning is it has unleashed very large landslides, coming down into the ocean, into valleys. They’re cutting off valleys, cutting roads, clearing away bridges, so it’s really a messy situation over there.
The main city in the east of the island, Hualian, which is quite a small city and it’s a quite remote area, was struck, and there has been damaged there. We’ve seen two large buildings have partially collapsed. But I have to say, given the strength of this earthquake - 7.4 and very very strong shaking, mercifully the damage to the urban infrastructure has so far been relatively light.
Rupert, I know earlier there had been concerns about tsunamis. What’s the latest on that?”
That’s right. The Japenese authorities, because Japan’s southern islands are very close to Taiwan, they put up a tsunami warning this morning immediately after the earthquake. We have seen some very very small tsunami about 30 centimeter, but still water rushing into a fishing port off the east coast here and rushing out again. But nothing on the scale that would cause major damage, and fortunately, those tsunami warnings have now been lifted.
Rupert Wingfield Hayes in Taipei, thank you very much indeed.

With the number of emergency crews arriving in the Summerside neighborhood on Monday night, some neighbors feared it was a response to a tragedy.
“I saw a lot of cops coming out of the house, and there were a lot of people on the driveway as well. They seemed like they were consoling somebody.”
Edmonton Police confirmed they responded to a dog attack call around 8:00
p.m. at 82nd Street and 11th Avenue Southwest. Officers discovered a severely injured 11-year-old boy who was attacked by two very large dogs. Despite life-saving attempts, the boy was declared dead at the home.
The dogs belong to the person living in the home where the boy was visiting. Both dogs have been seized by Animal Control. Its officers have already responded to two attack complaints at the home this year. One complaint is still under investigation, but the other was settled without charges laid.
“My son walks to school and from school, so that’s concerning that, you know, not even just their dog, but any animal attack could happen now. It’s in my mind.”
“Thinking about my own kids. Imagine losing a kid at 10.”
“What a devastating thing to take place.”
Liza Sunley doesn’t know the details of the attack, but as CEO of Edmonton Humane Society, she says there’re things for dog owners to watch for - to try to preventing attacks.
“It’s very important that owners know their dog, they have them trained, and that anyone who’s interacting with animals has some level of awareness of how to read body language or is there with the owner who can help to interpret that. So if a dog is fearful or begins to be aggressive, we can stop that behavior, separate the person from the dog.”
The two dogs are currently at the animal control center under the Dangerous Dogs Act. A judge can rule dogs to be put down if they bite or threaten to bite a person.

We want to turn to some breaking news now. Former President Donald Trump has secured a $175 million bond in his New York civil case. Trump secured the bond through Knight Specialty Insurance.
Last Monday, a panel of judges from New York’s Appellate Division granted the former president, his adult sons, and two former Trump Organization executives a ten-day stay of the $464 million judgment in their civil fraud case and permitted them to post a reduced bond of $175 million.
Let’s bring in senior investigative correspondent Aaron Katersky for more. Aaron, I know you’ve been following this. So what does this mean both for Trump and also his sons and the others involved in this case?
Primarily, it means their assets that are not going to be seized at the end of the week by the New York Attorney General aerial?. Posting the bond guarantees that Trump can pay at least a portion of a civil fraud judgment that runs to nearly a half-billion dollars.
And the appeals court allowed Trump to guarantee that judgment with a reduced, still hefty, $175 million bond. According to a court filing, Trump was able to secure that bond through a Los Angeles-based surety, Knight Specialty Insurance Company.
We don’t know what he had to put up as collateral, but likely it’s quite a substantial amount of cash. Trump’s lawyers had said that he could cobble together maybe $100 million in cash, but certainly couldn’t afford anything more. So we don’t know what else he may have put up as collateral.

We’ve all seen numerous articles and studies claiming the benefits of step count with rather different figures, so what is the truth behind walking and health? How many daily steps should we be doing?
We should think of studies not as the latest study is the best, but we should think of studies as pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. They all say something, but you need to put them all together and look at them in totality.
I believe that the totality of evidence indicates two important things. First, that any stepping is good. And second, the more you do, the better you are. up to a certain point.
This certain point may differ according to your age. Among individuals who are younger than 60 years of age, the point of maximum benefit appears to be somewhere between 8 and 10,000 steps a day. Among those 60 and older, the point of maximum benefit appears to be somewhere between 6 and 8,000 steps a day.
If you prefer and choose to do a high-intensity workout in the gym, that will take you less time. If you prefer to walk, it will take you a longer time to offset the potential harm from sedentary activity.
Being sedentary and physically active are not flip sides of the coin because one can be very active and one can be very sedentary. So people who have desk jobs like me probably are very sedentary most of their work time, but we can also be active outside of work time, so we have both characteristics.
You could possibly stand while you’re thinking every half an hour or so, but it’s also useful to take a short walk. And it doesn’t have to be a walk around the block. You can simply walk up and down the corridor, go up and down the stairs if you have stairs at home, or do some jumping jacks. Physical activity is something that is so crucial for health. What drug do you know when taken can benefit so many health outcomes with so little side effect?
